Vintage Studio Pottery Bowl by Gus Hyatt

£35.00

Beautifully formed hand thrown stoneware bowl by Gus Hyatt, former student of Reigate & Redhill School of Art & Crafts and Wimbledon School of Art in the late 50's and early 60s.

Gus Hyatt worked in ceramics producing thrown pots, mostly functional individual pieces such as this beautiful bowl, which is typical of his style.

Hyatt selected, developed and made his own glazes and slips for oxidised kiln firings. To give spontaneity to these glazes he used glaze layering and reactive materials to achieve a relationship with geological surfaces such as rocks, pebbles, strata and erosion, swell as patterns of growth such as lichens and mosses.

This gorgeous bowl is typical of his style in form and surface pattern, the earth toned glaze layering reminiscent of layers of rock strata.

The initials GH are etched into the base and the bowl still bears the original artists address sticker, indicating this would once have been a gallery piece.

A lovely piece of ceramic art history.

Diameter: 16cm.
